History
Usually servants of the Lord receive a desire to serve Him in a particular type of ministry. After accepting this call, the process of funding the call He has given is begun. In the case of Shadow of His Wings, it happened differently. In 1999 a contact was made from the United States of America, seeking a person or persons to manage the distribution of food, clothing and other items to widows and orphans in Guatemala, in response to James 1:27 which teaches us that to take care of the widows is to do the will of God.

The ministry began small, taking boxes of food, firewood, shoes, sweaters, and other items to different parts of Guatemala as the need was made known to missionaries Gilbert and Joanne Simpson through a continually growing network of pastors and directors of national Christian schools. Educational sponsorships were also given to orphans who desired to attend a Christian school. An advisory council of North Americans and Guatemalans was formed. It wasn't long before what began as a trickle of dollars into Guatemala increased to a few thousand, as the Lord began to affirm His calling by way of supplying the needed finances. Leadership desired to become the best servants possible and therefore sought counsel and prayer.

During one of these times of prayer, God used a pastor who was a part of the council to speak to Carroll Bishop, one of the counsel members, in a prophetic manner. He shared with her that God had shown him that she had the heart that was needed to open an orphanage. Carroll replied, "I already have a name chosen." From this beginning, the direction of the Lord began to be understood and prayer was focused on the steps needed for the Simpsons and Carroll Bishop to form the non-profit organization, James Project of Latin America, and open the orphanage, Shadow of His Wings.

In October of 2001, an Assembly was formed with five Guatemalans and five North Americans. A lawyer was retained, a site for a home for the children was sought, household appliances and furniture were purchased, paperwork was filed with the Guatemala government, a bank account was opened, personnel were secured and Shadow of His Wings became a reality.

Official approval was received from the national government and the national court system to receive children in May of 2002. The current site houses forty children and has been full nearly all of the time since the doors opened. The girls presently in the Home range in age from a little over a year through nineteen and have come through the court system of Guatemala.

Funding is a never-ending process as grants are being sought from what became a 501(c) 3 organization through the sponsorship of a donor in the United States. The intent of this donor organization in the United States is to raise funds first for the James Project of Latin America, and then for similar projects in Latin America and the world as funding becomes available. Other organizations and churches have joined in to help with funding, as the organization becomes better known. However, the need has increased as God continues to open His will to the founding leadership.

First was the Girls' Home, second came the opening of the government-approved James Christian School (now Liberty Christian School after the move to Monjas) which became a necessity in order to give the girls of the Home a place to receive an education at a level where they could be successful. Future projects include a medical facility, Clinic of Faith and Hope as well as a home for widows, to be known as Grammy's House.

As God continued to pour out His blessing, Shadow of His Wings leadership completed the purchase of approximately 10 acres of cleared land near Monjas in the Department of Jalapa, southeast of Guatemala City about 3 hours' drive. This was finalized October 7, 2004.  Presently the construction of a wall completely around the land and our first two duplex homes for girls are complete.

There is much more yet to come and we wait upon the Lord for His provision and leading.
