The Simpsons and Carroll Bishop founded James Project of Latin America in 2003. Joanne’s role at James Project of Latin America was that of Executive Director. She was responsible for vision, planning, funding, legal matters, staff hiring and development, long-term planning and implementation, supervision of administrative staff, general oversight of construction matters, and providing policies and procedures for all areas. She and Carroll also travelled on vision sharing trips to the US and Canada to share with churches about what the Lord was doing in Monjas.
In the US, Joanne started as a teacher, teaching for 14 years and earning her Master’s Degree in Christian School Administration. During this time she founded and worked in administration of a Christian School, co-founded a Birthright Center, worked in counseling with abusive parents at an Intervention Center, and was the Christian Education Director in a church. For 12 years she worked as a foster mother. She is the mother to 7 children – 5 of whom are adopted, a proud grandmother of 6.
After moving to Guatemala, Joanne ministered in the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) Latin America as Director of School Development, planning for and accompanying some eighteen short-term missions group each year. Joanne also ran an educational sponsorship program for around 270 children throughout Guatemala in eight schools, managed special project donations, and was a presenter in Christian education teacher conferences throughout Central America as well as in Colombia. In 2004, Joanne dedicated her full attention to the work of the James Project of Latin America.
Joanne is still involved at Shadow of His Wings as the President of the Board. Her responsibilities in this position include running board meetings, and developing committees to work on items such as long-range development, board policies, admissions, special activities, etc.
